Join Hellen of Haldane for an online discovery of this manuscript that is not as well known as the Book of Kells – but should be. We will review the manuscript, its history and then start looking at the calligraphy. Bring your pens if you want to work along or just watch and be fascinated.

Dynamic Displays for Digital Denizens

Displays are sometimes hard when it comes to research. If your interests lie in the philosophical sphere, your display at Kingdom A&S is somewhat lacking. How do you display a research paper? Digital humanities tools can help you reach more members of the populace, give people who aren’t your judges something to look at and allow you to make connections between topics or individuals.

  1. Understand digital Humanities as a concept
  2. Learn about several digital tools 
  3. Connect tools to types of projects
  4. Gain confidence in using alternative research display methods.

Embroidery Design and Research

It’s Hot! Heat injuries are a common and preventable. If you’re an event steward, marshal, participant, camper, a person at an SCA event; this class is for you. Mundanely I am a Trauma Certified RN and have years of experience treating heat related injuries. I’ll review prevention, types of heat injuries, treatment and when to seek emergency care.

Heraldry and Iconography in the Ethereal Realm: SCA Graphics in Digital Mediums 101

Introduction to designing and creating sca related graphics including hereldic devices, event logos, ect., in digital formats. Welcometo those with limitedcomputer experience. This is NOT a class about hereldic design, but how to format those designs so they can be shown in their best light on websites and professionally printed, ie sent to a print shop for t-shirts and other swag. Will cover topics such as, file formats and when to use them, vector vrs bitmap, software options.

  1. Introduction to digital image editing, including vector images. 
  2. where to find images resources for projects, ie vector databases and hereldic images. 
  3. when to use vector over bitmaps
  4. How to prepare graphics for print shops and online stores

A look at the various cities that existed at the 3-way intersection of the heart of civilization, and why and when these cities came and went.

  1. An accurate look at what cities existed in the Mediterranean Middle East at different points in period
  2. An understanding of why some cities continue to thrive while others are only ruins or small modern settlements.
  3. A bucket list of places to visit in the region depending on the period/place of your persona.

I took commonly accepted knowledge about medieval Muslim women and tried to apply it to a specific time and place. And boy was I surprised by how l had been. Join me to learn the answers to: at what age could you be married? Could you own property? Could you take a dispute to court? Was divorce an option? How many marriages were common for women? Could married women work? And much more!

  1. Students will examine their own assumptions that masquerade as facts
  2. Students will learn the the importance of context to our understanding of history
  3. Students will learn that medieval Muslim women had a variety of nuanced experiences

PayPal: It’s easier than you think!

Do you want to make it easier for people to pay for an event? Are you an event steward, exchequer or gate steward? This class is for you! I’ll review the pre registration process, PayPal use, including PayPal fees in an event budget, reporting income and fees from PayPal, common issues and errors with pre registration and gate forms. I’ll also touch on donations and use of PayPal at gate.

  1. List information needed to set up pre registration to use pre registration
  2. Demonstrate where to report PayPal income and fees
  3. State how and when to contact the PayPal Deputy

Pilgrimage to Canterbury

We will follow a virtual 10 day trek of 76 miles from Southwark Cathedral to Canterbury Cathedral, which would have been a popular thing to do in England between 1174 and 1538.

Student Learning Outcomes: 

  1. Understand why people would go on Pilgrimage.
  2. Learn in detail about the route from London to Canterbury.
  3. Learn about Thomas Becket, medieval Canterbury, and the evolution of Canterbury Cathedral

The Fall of the Valois Dynasty (or a quick spin through 16th century France)

Both Louis the XIV and the Mona Lisa are related to the events that occured in 16th century France. We’ll cover 1494 to 1510 in a whirlwind of Kings, Queens, intrigue, spies, war, colonialism, religion, and some of the major players in this little more than a century of French history.

History of Printed Textiles

A historic review of printed textiles and clothing from prehistoric clues of its origins to documented practices in the Middle Ages. Also there will be a discussion on the difference between block printing, stenciling/screen printing, resist dyeing, mordant dyeing, discharge dyeing, and hand-painting on textiles. There will be no actual printing on textiles in this class.

Student Learning Outcomes: 

  1. Learn what different printing types there are
  2. Learn how far back printing on fabric dates
  3. Learn that printing on fabric did exist in the SCA time frame
